Ghana’s airports are likely to open to international travel by September, Editor-in-Chief of the New Crusading Guide newspaper, Abdul-Malik Kweku Baako has has said. He hinted at it on Saturday, 15 August 2020 on Accra-based Joy FM’s newsfile programme. The move is aimed at giving Ghanaians outside the chance to fly down to register and vote in the upcoming 7 December polls, Mr Baako noted. “In doing some checks within the corridors of power, a hint dropped into my ears; possibly, the airports might be reopened 1 September”, he revealed on the programme. However, “the land borders will remain closed”, Mr Baako said. Ghana’s air, sea and land borders were closed to human traffic in March after the country detected her first two cases of COVID-19. The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has assured the general public that the fire outbreak at its office at Sarpeiman near Amasaman in the Greater Accra Region did not affect its Data Centre. The EC noted that the fire outbreak will not affect the conduct of the 7 December 2020 polls. Fire gutted the election management body’s regional office in the early hours of Friday, 14 August 2020. In a statement issued by the EC following the incident, the Commission entreated the general public “to ignore the falsehood being peddled on social media to the effect that its Data Centre was destroyed by the fire.” It further assured “the general public that its Data Centre is safe and secure”.   Chairman of the National Peace Council (NPC), Reverend Professor Emmanuel Asante says mistrust among political actors is contributing immensely to electoral violence in the country. According to him, there is trust deficit in Ghana’s electoral system, especially on the part of political parties, thereby giving room for political vigilantes to protect their interests. Prof. Asante who was addressing an advocacy workshop on Vigilantism and Related Offences Act at Asante Mampong in Ashanti, also underlined the need for ruling parties to ensure the independence of state institutions to avert needless suspicions when in opposition. The couple were facing each other in this stunning photo which was obviously shot before their  traditional marriage ceremony . Aggrieved customers of defunct savings and loans as well as microfinance companies have accused the Akufo-Addo government of lying about paying 98 per cent of its members whose deposits got locked up after the financial sector clean-up exercise undertaken by the regulators. The aggrieved customers in the Ashanti region, on Thursday, 13 August 2020, picketed the receiver's office at Adum, Kumasi over the matter. Numbering about 200, the angry customers were clad in red and black attire. They wailed and chanted war songs at the premises of the receiver’s locked offices. They later converged on the Adum Maranata Church premises where documents of proof of non-payment were collected by their leaders. Some of the customers who spoke to Kumasi FM threatened to vote against the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) if their locked-up funds were not paid.   Recruitment of Nurse Assistants into the Ministry of Health will commence on Thursday, 20 August 2020. This was announced by the Ministry of Health in a statement signed by its Acting Chief Director, Kwabena Boadu Oku-Afari on Wednesday, 12 August 2020. The ministry informed Nurse Assistant, Clinical (NAC) and Nursing Assistant, Preventive (NAP) personnel who completed in 2017 from various public health training institutions that “recruitment into the service” will begin at 12 pm on the stipulated day. It also requested qualified applicants to formally apply through the Ministry of Health’s online application portal and follow the instructions to select to the preferred agency under the ministry.   Some chiefs of Wassa Dompem in the Western Region have called on the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa Nsuaem, Mr George Mireku Duker, to apologise to them and their subjects for allegedly instructing armed police officers to disrupt a sod-cutting ceremony for works to begin on the construction of a 20-seater ultra-modern toilet facility for the community on Friday, 7 August 2020. The project is allegedly being funded by the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the Tarkwa Nsuaem Constituency, Mr John Justice Abban.  According to the residents, the armed men, who were sent by the MP, refused to listen to the chiefs and drove all the participants away from the venue.
